24 days till Christmas: Advent calendar for grown-ups

So as usual, I did this on the last day of November, and for that reason this easy-diy-calendar is coming a little "too late".
But don't worry! As this is more to adults than kids, you can still do it, and have all 5 presents in ONE day! ;)

 

So as we didn't want the usual chocolade calendars, nor Legos, we decided to fill our tree with tickets! Incredebly easy and simple! Here's couple of tips how you can make a calendar like this.

First phase is same for all of these: Buy 24 scratch and win -tickets.

·        **  Take 24 refridgeator magnets. Put tickets to your fridges door in order.

·       **  If your fridge has chalkboard paint (like ours), you can even mark these days with boxes.

·       **  Use washi-tape to make a tree to your wall. Tape tickets to trees "brances" in a way 24 tickets will look good.

·       **  Put wire to your wall/doorway/curtainrod and with the help of clothespins, attach 24 tickets to hang.

·       **  Put 24 tickets to a beautiful jar. Draw one ticket per day.

·      **  Using pins, put 24 tickets hanging in to your curtains.

And.. Now... How we did our own! You will need…

…spear wood for branches and frame

…couple of nails (nails, no screws!)

…old wallpapers /craft papers / gift wraps

…ribbon and 24 clothesspins

…glue, siccors and a pen

This took about 3 hours.

Make (or tell your husband to make) an tree, that stands on table. It doesn't really matter what color it is, as in the next phase you will cover your wood with paper.

Cut suitable pieces from your papers. Glue them to your tree (daa!).

It's a cute decoration piece as it is, but we wanted to use it as calendar (which can be used as a deco on Christmas Eve using balls and stuff).

Slip 24 clothespins to ribbon. Use these to attach tickets.

Spin ribbon over the tree.

Tadaa, it's ready!

First ticket was a winning combination. Great start!

HOW TO: wings and devil dress

This year (because of the moving) we didn't want to use extra cash to make our Halloween costumes, but as most of the people, we still wanted to celebrate.
As usual, we were really late with our costumes, so DIY was kind of the only option.
After browsing tens and tens eri costumes from the interenet, I decided to do "quick and easy" wings (= took a lot of nerves and were hard to do).

 

So, our costumes builded up around these wings. As I like to dress up in a way that people know we are together, I tought both of our costumes should be from the same theme.

Miro were Arch angel (as I 'see' them), and I was fallen angel.

For your diy wings you need:
- cardboard, which is big enough
- leather or other farbric / material you would like to use to make feathers
- leatherstraps/belts ect. which you will use for hand loops
- hot glue gun
- possibly black marker
- stapler

I used shooting target as my base. I drew other half free hand, and traced other half to get exaclty same sized wings. As we wanted to do really massive wings, I cut this out of each other and made a extension piece in between so that these would settle to right position when used. I could have done this with cardboard, in position as it is shown in picture, but imagine cardboard piece in between these two wings.

I cutted a piece of leather, glued and stapled it to between wings. At this point I also needed to find places to straps. As you don't need to repeat my errors, here's couple tips:
Ensure, that your straps are long enough and strong enough for this purpose. These wings are going to be really heavy. Staple them really well, I mean, use like tons of staples to be sure.
Don't use rubberband unless it's REALLY for heavy purpose, as in other case it wont last there without stretching our of shape.

Cut feathers from your material (I used leather) using a stencil. If I had to guess, I would say I used about 100-150 feathers for each section, but these really are big wings. I used 4 differend sizes so it would look as real as it can.
Glue feathers to base.

Do this to all these sections. Shake wings to see if any feathers fall (suprisingly many fell of as I hadn't glued them). As for positions, I can't say more than find the way that suits you better. I used real wing photos to be my guide lines.

You can paint your base to be black before you start, or you can use permanent marker afterwards to cover any parts of the base that is showing (I did this).
Lastly, sew buckles to upper leather straps, so you can tighten wings to be in the right position when wearing. Make holes to lowes leather straps, just like belts have.

Ask if there is something you would like to know, that I didn't tell! These took a lot of time, but you wont need to as you can avoid all the mistakes I did! :)

Emme viitsineet tänä vuonna tuhlata erityisemmin rahaa Halloween varusteisiin, mutta halusimme kuitenkin tätä pyhää juhlistaa.
Kuten yleensäkin, oltiin taas todella myöhässä liikkeellä asujen kanssa.
Kymmeniä ja kymmeniä eri asuja läpi koluttuamme, päätin tehdä "nopeat ja helpot" siivet (= erittäin hermoja raastavat ja hankalat).

Tässä tekstissä on siis siipien ohje. Mikäli kaipaat punaista mekko-ohjetta, löytyy se täältä:  paholaisen mekko

 

Asukokonaisuudet rakentuivat nimenomaan näiden siipien ympärille. Koska elän fiksaatiossa, että meidän kahden asujen tulee sopia toisiinsa keskenään, tuli molempien asujen olla samasta teemasta.

Mirosta tuli Arkkienkeli (sellaisena kuin minä heidät 'näen'), itse olin langennut enkeli.

Siipiin tarvitset:
- tarpeeksi ison pahvin
- nahkaa tai muuta materiaalia mistä haluat tehdä höyhenet
- nahkanauhaa/vyöt tms. joilla teet käsilenkit siipiin
- kuumaliimapyssyn
- mahdollisesti mustaa tussia
- nitojan

Leikkasin siivet isosta pahvisesta ammustaulusta. Piirsin toisen puolikkaan käsin, ja jäljensin sen toiseen palaseen saadakseni kaksi samanlaista siipeä. Koska halusimme tehdä todella massiiviset siivet, leikkasin ne ominaan ja tein keskelle "jatkopalan", että ne asettuisivat enemmän oikeiden siipien kohdille. Tämän olisi voinut tehdä myös pahvista kuvan tapaisesti niin, että välissä olisi pätkä pahvia.

Leikkasin väliin pätkän nahkaa, liimasin ja nidoin sen siipiin kiinni. Tässä kohtaa piti myös löytää paikat ja pituudet hihnoille. Koska teidän ei tarvitse toistaa minun virheitä, kerron tärpit;
varmista, että hihnat ovat tarpeeksi pitkä ja kestävät tätä tarkoitusta varten. Siivistä tulee todella painavat. Nido ne kunnolla kiinni, yksi tai kaksi niittiä ei tule riittämään, vaan ammu niin täyteen kuin kehtaat.
Ei kannata käyttää kuminauhaa, ellei se ole sitä todella paksua ja todella jämäkkää. Se ei kestä tätä painoa venymättä muodottomaksi.

Leikkaa kankaastasi (itse käytin verhoilunahkaa) mallia käyttäen erikokoisia sulkia. Villi veikkaus, että per osio taisi mennä joku 100-150 sulkaa, mutta tosiaan, nämä siivet ovat todella isot. :) Käytössäni oli 4 eri kokoista höyhentä/sulkaa, jotta vaikutelma olisi mahdollisimman aito.
Liimaa sulat paikalleen.

Toista sama jokaiselle neljälle osiolle. Ravitsele siipiä nähdäksesi tippuuko joku sulista (yllättävän monta löytyi aluksi liimaamatta). Asetteluun en oikein osaa sanoa muuta kuin kokeilemalla löytyy paras. Itse käytin mallina netistä löytämääni aitojen isojen siipien muotoa.

Pohjan voi maalata valmiiksi mustaksi, tai voit permanenttitussilla peitellä jos pohja näkyy jostain.
Lopuksi vielä ompele nahkaremmeihin kiinni ns. vyönsoljet, joilla voit kiristää nauhat halutun mittaisiksi. Tee vastakappaleeseen reiät samalla tavoin, kuin vyössäkin on.

DIY Lasipöytä // glass coffeetable

Kyllähän te tiedätte - ainakin naiset - sen tunteen, kun ostat jotain uutta kivaa sisustukseen, eikä se oikein sovi mihinkään jo olemassaolevaan...

...Ja sitten ne menee kaikki uusiksi.

Kyllä, näin kävi (taas). Ostin aivan ihanan maton, ja jouduin tästä syystä myymään keinutuolin (koska väri ja ei mahtunut enää), vaihtamaan verhot ja pistämään ukon tekemään uuden pöydän. Kaikki tämä siis kahdeksalta illalla.

I know, that you know - atleast all the woman out there - that feeling when you buy something new to decorate your home, and it doesn't fit to anything you already have....

...Aaaand then you have to redo all of it.
Yes, it happened (again). I bought a lovely carpet, and for that reason I needed to sell my rocking chair (because of the color and it didn't fit here anymore), I had to change curtains and I had to order hubby to make me a new table. And all of this 8 PM.

 Kuten varmasti tiedätte, meiltä löytyy kaikenmaailman sekalaista tavaraa kaapeista, joista tällä hetkellä koitetaan myös päästä eroon. Tähän tarkoitukseen tarvittiin yksi IKEA-pinnatuoli, puinen kaapinovi sekä lasihylly.

As you know, I have a lot of random stuff at our home, which we're trying to get rid off. One broken IKEA-chair, wooden door and glass shelf would do the trick for this one. 

Ensin oven keskiö poistettiin, jotta pöydästä ei tulisi umpio, vaan keskeltä näkisi läpi. Tämän jälkeen mitattiin reunoille paikat, joihin porataan reiät jalkoja varten.


First, we removed center of this door to get it see trought. Then we measured spots where we're suppose to drill some holes for these legs. 

Tämän jälkeen jalat liimattiin paikalleen. Tämä ei todellakaan ollut helppoa, ja suosittelen ehdottomasti tekemään tämän jonkun kanssa eikä yksin. Pöytä jätettiin yön yli liimaukseen painon alle.

Then we glued legs to their places. This was NOT easy, and I will recommend you to do this with a friend. We left it under weight for over night to get glued. 

Meillä oli valmiina lasihylly, joka sopi täydellisesti tähän uuteen pöytään. Jos et omista valmiiksi juuri oikean kokoista lasihyllyä/lasia jonka asettaa pöytään, voit leikata sitä lasileikkurilla (tai näin oletan, tästä en tiedä sen tarkemmin).

We had this glass shelf which fitted perfectly to our new table. If you ain't that lucky, you could cut glass with glasscutter to make one that fits your future table (or I assume you could, I have never tryed).

 Liimauksen jälkeen, pöytä maalattiin huonekalumaalilla valkoiseksi. Maalasin kaksi kerrosta, kuvassa nähtävissä ensimmäinen kerros.

After gluing I painted table with furniture paint, 2 layers. (in picture you can see first layer). 

Melko helppoa, melko nopeaa, ja RAKASTAN SITÄ. Ja tottakai myös parempaa puoliskoa, joka auttoi minua tässä projektissa.

Pretty easy, pretty quick, and I LOVE IT. And ofcourse, I love my husband, who helped me here a lot. 
 

Shoebox here, shoebox there

As most of you know, we're going to move out from Finland. No, we don't have jobs or home there where we are heading - yet. We just want to discover what life has to offer for us. So, we're hopping on in to our RV... Before that, we need do adjust some things in life and sell most of our stuff, and replace some of our stuff with less heavy and more compact versions.

So, a while ago we refashioned some shoeboxes to look nicer, as those are really light and easy to use as storage boxes.

You will only need: shoeboxes (or other cardboard boxes that can be used as storagebox), leftover wallpapers, brush and some glue (with water, it's more liquid like when mixed up with water).

Toughest part for me was picking up "the right wallpaper", as I do have a lot of these.
Gluing should be done straight to wallpaper BEFORE you cut it, so your piece wont be too small. Do it as you would wrap a gift.

Put glue to that side of the box you're going to glue. Glue needs to be evenly, as if you're going to just dump it somewhere there, it won't look pretty and it will be visible through paper. Especially thinner papers will shrink, and all these lines and mistakes are going to show up.

Cut paper along sides, or fold a little inside. I folded box about 1cm inside, but with box cover I just cutted it along the line, as when you are using this cover, folding could get loose within time.

You could add some lace or pearls to these if you like, I left these bare as I think these wallpapers don't need any decorations.

Fixing RV with dc-fix // Vaunun fixausta -fixillä

So we really want to make this RV to look like it's ours. We decided to do something for kitchen counter and for all other levels there is, and for that reason, we bought DC-fix. A lot.

We tryed to clean up these counters but nothing worked for them (and I really did scrub..) so this kind of was the only option.

Kitchen area BEFORE

So, first things first, we measured all the counters and went shopping. We decided to take this gray DC-fix for counters. This project took about 2 rolls, other 90cm wide and other 60cm wide.

Dining area BEFORE

It was pretty easy, we had some issues with corners, but if you don't look them too closely, they look "pretty ok". ;)

Kitchen AFTER

Kitchen counter was done with one 90cm wide piece.

For dining table we used two 60cm wide pieces.

The rest of them we used in various places, like nightstand and shelves behind dining area.

That's it! Cost: almost nothing, Time: couple of hours. :)

This blog has been a little quite lately, as we have been doing some large life changes. 

We decided to buy caravan, which probably comes our permanent home at some point. We will tell about this journey more in here and probably at "Mööpelin matkassa" -blog, but at this point it's only in Finnish. 

But don't worry! I won't shut this blog down. I will still write here about decoration and diy-stuff.

Saippuapullo - Handle with care

Tämän vuotinen kevät ja alkukesä on ollut ihanan lämmin, eikä tästä syystä varmasti monikaan ole sisällä viettänyt erityisesti aikaa. Itse olen ainakin lähinnä paistatellut auringossa ja opetellut puutarhan hoitoa (kyllä se vielä joku päivä luonnistuu!)

This years spring and foresummer has been delightfully warm in Finland, and for that reason I don't think than anyone has been that much inside passing time. I personally have been outside enjoying sun and learning gardening (someday I'll be good at it too!)

 
Mutta tämä viikko on ollut hiukan sateinen, ja tästä syystä olen pakotetusti ollut sisällä.
Saippuapulloja on tullut aiemminkin touhuttua, mutta kuten jokainen maaninen sisustaja tietää; kyllästyminen käy äkkiä.

But this week has been a little rainy and I've been forced to be inside. 
 I've done some soapbottles earlier too, but as every manic decorator knows; you get bored ever so quickly.

Tarvitset ainoastaan vanhan saippuapullon, tai pullon ja pumppuosan joka sopii valitsemaasi pulloon, sekä tietysti dymokirjoittimen. Kirjoita dymolla haluamasi teksti ja liimaa pullon kylkeen. Ja olet valmis!

Hyvää sunnuntaita!

All you need is old soapbottle or bottle and pump bottle cap that goes with the bottle you have chosen, and ofcourse DYMO-writer. Write your favorite sentence with dymo and stick it to bottle. And you're all done!

HOW TO: Läppärialusta / Laptop platform

Jokainen läppäriä paljon käyttävä tietää, kuinka nopeasti huonolla alustalla läppäri alkaa pitämään kovaa hurinaa ja kuumenemista. Sehän johtuu tietysti siitä, että ilmanottoaukot eivät saa kierrätettyä ilmaa (ja toki myös siitä jossei kone jaksa kaikkia ohjelmia pyörittään).

Everyone who uses laptop in their everyday life knows how quickly laptop starts to get hot and rotates fan really quickly. The reason for is usually that laptops airholes don't get enough air (and also sometimes reason is that your computer just don't have enough power to run all open programs).

Tähänhän on tietysti myytävänä ihan valmiita läppärialustoja, mutta me tyylillemme uskollisena tietysti teimme tämän itse.
Ohessa siis tee-se-itse läppärialusta - muutamalla vaihekuvalla

Ofcourse, they sell laptop platforms in stores, but we did one by ourselfs. 
Here is DIY laptop platform with pictures to show how we did it.

Tarvitset:
* Metallilevyn, jota voit käyttää alustan pohjana
* Tuulettimen
* Esim. vanhoja listanpaloja tai laudanpätkiä laidoiksi
* Pari ruuvia

You need:
* Metal plate to use as platform
* Computerfan
* Old flooring list pieces or woodboard ect
* Couple of screws

Me käytimme metallilevynä vanhan pöytäkoneen koteloa, josta leikkasimme toisen sivun tasaiseksi alustaksi. Valitsimme sivun, jossa oli valmiiksi reiät tuuletinta varten. Jos sinulla on käytössä metallilevy, jossa ei ole vielä reikiä, voit porata niitä porakoneen avulla tai iskeä naulalla läpi. Muista tehdä reiät niin päin, että niiden terävät reunat ovat alapuolta kohden, sillä reikien terävät reunat voivat muutoin vahingoissaa koneesi pohjaa.

Yhdistä tuulettimen johtoihin USB-kaapeli, jos et osaa tehdä tätä itse, pyydä apua osaavalta (itse pyysin aviomieheltä apua).
Kiinnitä tuuletin pohjaan kiinni ruuveilla.

We used old deskcomputer case as platform plate. We chose that side which already had holes for fan. If your metalplate don't have holes in it, you can do them with trill or nail and hammer. If you have to do holes by yourself, make them from top to bottomside; this way holesides won't damage your laptops bottom.

Attach USB-caple to fan. If you can't do this yourself, ask for help from someone who knows what to do (I asked my husband for help).
Attach fan to bottom with couple of screws.

Mittaa puusta sopivat palaset metallilevyn päihin, ja kiinnitä ruuveilla. Valitse tarpeeksi korkeat palaset, jotta tuulettimesta olisi paras mahdollinen hyöty. Taaemman palasen tulisi olla hiukan korkeampi, jotta työskenelyasento olisi käsille parempi.

Measure right size pieces from wood to metalplate. Choose pieces that are high enough so that fan gives the best possible benefit. Back piece should be higher than front part for better working position.

 

 Kiinnitä tuulettimen johto metallilevyn pohjaan. Itse käytimme teippiä.

Attach fans wire to metal plates bottoms. We used tape.

Voila! Kustannukset.. Nolla euroa! Sillä kaikki löytyi jo valmiiksi kaapista. Nyt voit vain yhdistää tuulettimen USB-portilla koneeseen. Kaunis se ei ole (vielä), mutta ajaa todella hyvin asiansa.

Voila! Costs: Nothing! As I used things around our house. Now just connect USB to your computer. It's not pretty, but it does it's thing!

Grandfatherclock wallsticker

As we switched our living rooms order just before christmas, I knew I need to do something with this wall where was that bookshelv because it looked so empty. Luckily I had this wallsticker that I bought from IKEA about an year ago from discountcorner. I don't know if other countryes has these corners, but I do, I totally recommend to browse them every time. You never know what you find.

Tuossa kun ennen joulua vaihdettiin olohuoneen järjestystä, tajusin jo samalla, että seinälle tarvitsee keksiä jotain kirjahyllyn tilalle. Kuinka sopivasti olikaan mulla kaapissa IKEA:sta ostettu seinätarra, lojunnut jo varmaan vuoden päivät. Ostin sen alelaarista alennusosastolta muistaakseni 4€, eli kannattaa aina käydä ko. osastolla kun vierailee IKEA:ssa. ;)

So as you can see, that wall just about screams for something to put on. I was thinking about for shelvs direct to wall but as those will leave spots if I ever want to take them of, I deciced to use wallsticker.

Kuten kuvista huomaa, seinä suorastaa huusi jotain täytettä itselleen. Meinasin ensin, että seinään olisi kiinnitetty hyllyjä, mutta ne olisivat jättäneet kuitenkin isot jäljet seinään, joten päädyin seinätarraan.

I bought a wallclock to this sticker, which it didn't have it self. 

Lisäsin tarran päälle seinäkellon, sillä sellainen ei siis tullut tarran mukana.

Gingerbreadhouse / Piparkakkutalo

Elämäni ensimmäinen piparitalo on touhuttu! Jee! Viime vuonna oli tarkoitus myös tehdä tällainen, mutta osat hajosivat jo ennen kasausvaihetta. Jätin silloin suosiolla väliin. :)

My first gingerbreadhouse ever! I was suppose to do this last year also, but it broke before I even tought about building it. ;)

Pikeerit tein itse äidin puhelinohjeistuksella, kuuset tehtiin vapaalla kädellä kun en omistanutkaan kuusimuottia (no, onpahan aidonnäköiset!) ja talo rakentui netistä löydetyillä kaavoilla. Sydämet veisteli ikkunoiksi tuo parempi puolisko. <3

I made royal icing with mother's phone guidance, trees were freehanded as I didn't own a treemold (well, at least they look like real, hah!) and the house was built with online patterns. Heart-windows were carved by my husband. <3

Kaikki ei toki mennyt ihan niinkuin piti. Koristelimme katon osat ennen kuin tajusimme, että tosiaan piippu olisi varmaan pitänyt kiinnittää ensin. No, ajattelimme kiinnittää piipun pikeerin päälle, mutta tajusimme, että piipun osat olivat väärin koristeltu, eli meiltä puuttui yksi seinämä piipusta (eli, muistakaa tehdä aina peilikuvaosat kun teette jotain mistä tulee moniulotteinen..)

Onneksi olimme huomanneet tehdä tikkaat, joten tässä tapauksessa tikkaat kiinnitettiin katon palaseen (normaalia, Suomessa ainakin).

Ofcourse everything did not go as planned.  We decorated the roof components before we realized that chimney was suppose to be attached before that. Well, we thought could attach it on top of royal icing, but we realized that chimneys parts were decorated wrongly, and that we did not have a single wall chimney (ie, always remember to make a mirror image of the parts when you do something you should be multi-dimensional ..)

Fortunately, we had done ladders, so in this case, ladders were attached to the roof (normal, at least in Finland).

Mutta, näppäränä keksin kuitenkin niilekin palasille tarpeellista käyttöä! Eli, nyt talossamme olikin aitaus.

But, I did figure out how to use those spare parts after all. Now our gingerbreadhouse has fence!

Talon palasten kiinnittämiseen käytimme sulatetun sokerin ja siirapin yhdistelmää.

To attach those house parts, we used melted sugar and syrup.

Vähän vanua, jouluvalot ja tomusokeria, niin joulutalo on valmis!

Some cotton and christmaslights and icing sugar, you have a christmas home!

 Tämän talon pihalle oli eksynyt myös hirvi. Hyvää joulun odotusta!
